Ailments Associated With Gum Infection

Periodontal or gum disease is an infection that stresses not only the dental health but also the entire body. Serious medical conditions that affect the body’s ability to produce sugar such as people with diabetes and kidney diseases can contribute to periodontal disease. Research shows the link between certain medical conditions such as heart attack, stroke and diabetes with gum disease. Medications to treat medical conditions can cause swollen gums, thus making it more susceptible with gum infection.

Dental bacteria that cause gum disease are found to be the same bacteria that travel in the bloodstream causing the arteries to be blocked resulting to heart attack and stroke. Diabetics will have difficulty in controlling their blood sugar levels when there is the presence of gum disease and gum infection. Pregnant women with gum infection are at higher risk of low birth weight and premature babies.

Gum infection can be reversed when caught early. All it takes is to brush and floss regularly and include a natural oral rinse in your daily oral care regimen. Periodic dental check ups and cleanings are necessary to ensure healthy mouth and to avoid gum infection.
